To say nowadays that Herr Mauritz Stiller is one of the most important northern directors and, by extension, of the history of the cinema, is not a novelty, but this aristocrat still gets surprised by his masterly direction when he has the opportunity to see or rescue films from the mentioned cineaste that where unknown for him.
This happens with the film “Gunnar Hedes Saga”, an excellent piece, sometimes masterful, where we can find the best references and usual characteristics of Stiller’s cinema. Deep and tormented (psychological) human portraits, shown here by the difficult relationship between mother and son or the convenience between the practical life sense or the choice of art as a “modus vivendi”, as well as the natural spaces, harsh northern landscapes as decisive and active main characters of his stories. It is important to notice, as an added value, that the most prestigious Stiller’s films were adaptations of Swedish Selma Lagerlöf’s masterpieces as well as Julius Jaenzon’s cinematography.
“Gunnar Hedes Saga” ’s narrative vitality is specifically celebrated during the reindeers’ stampede scene which will have severe consequences for the main character Gunnar Hede ( Einar Hanson ), leaving him unbalanced and half crazy until he meets again with Ingrid ( Mary Johnson) and also for the film’s composition which fluctuates between the realism and oneiric atmosphere perfectly assembled here.
Concluding, this is an exceptional, lyric and modern film, the quintessence of one of the greatest directors of the cinema’s history.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave due to the fact that all this snow has recalled to this German Count his aristocratic stays in Tyrol, without reindeers of course, but full those luxurious hotels with rich Alpine heiresses.

Decir a estas alturas silentes que Herr Mauritz Stiller es uno de los más importantes directores nórdicos y por extensión de la historia del cine, no es ninguna novedad, pero éste aristócrata sigue sorprendiéndose de su magistral dirección cuando tiene la oportunidad de rescatar o ver filmes del mencionado cineasta, que hasta ahora le eran desconocidos.
Así sucede con el filme “Gunnar Hedes Saga”, una obra excelente, magistral por momentos, en el cual encontramos las mejores referencias y características habituales de su cine; profundos y atormentados retratos ( psicológicos ) humanos ( en este caso, la difícil relación entre madre e hijo, la conveniencia entre el sentido práctico de la vida o la elección del arte como “modus vivendi” ) y los espacios naturales, duros paisajes nórdicos como elementos decisivos y activos protagonistas de sus historias; además hay que resaltar como valor añadido que los más prestigiosos filmes de Mauritz Stiller eran adaptaciones cinematográficas de obras literarias de la importante escritora sueca Selma Lagerlöf, además de contar también en muchos de esos filmes, con la fotografía del gran Julius Jaenzon.
El vigor narrativo de “Gunnar Hedes Saga” es especialmente celebrado durante la escena de la estampida de la manada de renos que tendrá graves consecuencias para su protagonista, Gunnar Hede ( Einar Hanson ), dejándolo trastornado y medio loco hasta que se re-encuentre con Ingrid ( Mary Johnson, sublime ) además de la composición de todo el filme, que fluctúa entre el realismo y ambientes oníricos magníficamente ensamblados en la obra, que la dotan de un vigoroso ritmo narrativo.
Un filme excepcional, lírico y moderno, la quintaesencia del cine de uno de los grandes directores de la historia del cine.
Y ahora si me lo permiten les dejo momentáneamente, pues tanta nieve le ha hecho recordar a éste Conde germánico sus aristocráticas estadías en el Tirol, sin renos bien es cierto, pero repletos los lujosos hoteles de ricas herederas alpinas.
